Often confused with salamanders, newts are amphibians that spend part of their lives in water and part on land (depending on the species).  They require a well-ventilated terrarium with a large water feature, a land area with a damp substrate suitable for burrowing, and hiding spots in both the water and land areas.  Newts are insectivorous and require a steady supply of appropriately sized live insects like crickets or bloodworms.  Newts have smooth, moist skin that can be easily damaged, so handling should be minimized.  Their lifespan varies depending on the species, but some newts can live for over 15 years with proper care.  Maintaining consistent humidity levels is essential for their health.  Like some salamanders, some newt species can be toxic, so researching the specific needs and potential dangers of your chosen species is necessary.
