Horses are large, herbivorous mammals known for their strength, athleticism, and companionship. They come in a wide variety of breeds, each with its own size, temperament, and intended use (e.g., draft horses, riding horses, racing horses). Owning a horse is a significant responsibility that requires a substantial commitment of time, space, and financial resources.  Horses need daily turnout in paddocks or pastures for exercise and grazing.  Their diet varies depending on breed, age, activity level, and health, but generally consists of high-quality hay supplemented with grains and concentrates.  Regular grooming and hoof care are essential for maintaining their health.  Horses require access to clean water and shelter from the elements at all times.  Veterinary care is crucial, including annual checkups, vaccinations, parasite prevention, and dental work.  Horses can live upwards of 30 years, so ownership is a long-term commitment.  Potential owners should be prepared for the significant cost of housing, feeding, and caring for a horse,  which can vary depending on location, breed, and chosen lifestyle (e.g., competitive riding vs. casual trail riding).
